CHARACTER NAME: Simon
SERIES: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
EDENSPHERE NAME: Garlock

PERSONALITY: Simon is pretty difficult to sum up. On the surface he's something of a kid still - young, brash, and indecisive in that he's not sure what to do with himself half the time. Still, his care for those he knows is unmatched, and he has an incredible ability to forgive those who have wronged him. Simon is a leader, but not necessarily at heart; he's great at inspiring people to act due to Kamina's encouragement in the past, but he feels lost in situations where he's on his own, unless it's related to fighting or digging. Even when given a political position, he's unsure of himself and would rather be part of the defense force. He's also not hard to influence, particularly by those he admires. Losing the people he cares about can devastate him. He's easily depressed to an extent, but also easily tugged back into a good mood. He could be called bipolar in a sense, but he's not that sporadic - everything he feels, he feels for good reason.

A major part of Simon's personality is Kamina's support, and thus should never be omitted. Simon relies strongly on Kamina's perception of him and the belief that the elder boy has in Simon. More often than not, Simon can't accomplish what Kamina knows he can unless Kamina himself as given him some kind of encouragement. Nothing gives Simon more strength than Kamina's belief in him. Even after Kamina is gone, Simon still holds on to the words, "Believe in me who believes in you" as well as "Believe in you who believes in yourself", both of which become the pillars of Simon's existence for most of his life. (Not to mention "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!")

Due to the recent battles in his life, Simon is stronger, fiercer, and more independent, not to mention ridiculously powerful, though it'll take him a long time to realize -that-. With this newfound confidence, Simon is a true leader, properly following in Kamina's footsteps at last.

BACKGROUND: Simon was born underground, in a village called Jiha. A digger by trade (as most villagers were, in order to expand their home), he lost his parents in an accident at the age of seven, and was thus orphaned and sort of raised by the village chief. At some point during that time he met Kamina, and they became fast friends, with Simon immediately latching on to Kamina's encouragement and enthusiasm, and Kamina seeing Simon's potential from the start. They had their share of interesting mishaps, but the most important of all were the events leading up to their escape from Jiha. It was all thanks to Simon and a small mecha called a Ganmen, named Lagann by Kamina. Once on the surface, Kamina acquired his own Ganmen, and they joined together (literally, soon after, creating the unparalleled Ganmen Gurren-Lagann) with a group of rebels to fight the surface oppressors, the Beastmen and their King, Lord Genome. During these fights, Kamina was fatally wounded, leaving Simon broken and depressed until he met and befriended a girl named Nia, who helped him dig his way out of his misery to take Kamina's place as leader of the Great Gurren Brigade and defeat Genome, regaining the surface for mankind.

Seven years later, as the Earth was enjoying peace and griping about the little stuff, the one millionth human was born, triggering an alien weapon known as the Human Annihilation System, created by the Anti-Spirals. Nia, by then Simon's fiancee, awakens as the Anti-Spiral Messenger, does her best to help them as they cause as much chaos as possible, with Simon in the middle frantically trying to save his girl and the world at the same time. Eventually the battle is taken to space, closer to the Anti-Spiral's homeworld, with Simon at the forefront, powering the Brigade's new Ganmen, Chouginga Gurren-Lagann like the mini-generator that he is. Unfortunately the Anti-Spirals have trap after trap set up for Spiral beings (ie. humans), with the finale being a dreamworld designed to suck in those who carry Spiral power, aka Simon and his crew. It is through this dreamworld that Simon wound up being 'born' in Edensphere. Not that he knows that, of course...

TIMELINE: Right in the middle of the Anti-Spiral battle (middle of episode 26 in particular)
